Walt Whitman’s Birthplace – State Historic Site Outing
February 28 @ 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Participate in a tour of Walt Whitman’s Birthplace Historical Site with teens and young adults in our Project Stewardship program! A knowledgeable interpreter will start our day around the authentically furnished family farmhouse, including the room in which Whitman was born. In the modern Interpretive Center, delve into Whitman’s life from his boyhood and teaching years on Long Island to his international prominence as a poet. Enjoy a self-guided tour as you read the updated exhibition panels, watch a video that features the U. S. Poet Laureate speaking about Whitman, and hear Walt’s voice reading his poem, America. We will conclude with a brief poetry reading from “Leaves of Grass” and a conversation over refreshments.
A bit about Walt Whitman and a few of his famous quotes to ponder:
• Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you
• Either define the moment or the moment will define you
• Be curious, not judgmental
• Re-examine all you have been told… dismiss that which insults your soul
• The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse
