Friends in Freedom – An Introduction to the History of the Underground Railroad on Long Island

At the 250th anniversary of America’s signing of the Declaration of Independence from England in 2027, the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in New York State, we are happy to introduce Long Island History in Your Own Backyard to the community!
In today’s session, attendees will learn about the strong community bonds that existed in the web of Quaker and African American communities that were involved in abolition and the Underground Railroad on Long Island and NYS, beginning with Jericho. Many heroes living on Long Island in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were instrumental in initiating the abolitionist movement in the northern American colonies. We will learn about some of these individuals who lived on the Jericho Preserve and in Historic Malcolm House. We will share some of their histories, stories, and impact that will resonate and inspire us today.
Sangha Education Center offers presentations, activities, house and walking tours via four modules: Long Island Quakers, The Underground Railroad on Long Island, Historic Malcolm House, and Women & Abolition.
