Description
Sangha Education Center offers professional Guidance Services for young adults based on our Different Abilities Development Model. Guidance and transition planning assists our young people as they enter new chapters of their lives, taking experiences attained in both our Project Stewardship and Civic Mentoring programs, and turns them into an action plan for life, school and career while minimizing anxiety, enabling success and well-being.
College and career preparation are important components of Guidance Services since these settings require executive function skills with which many young people struggle (organization, planning, time management, task initiation, goal-directed persistence, emotional regulation, problem solving including self-evaluation and self-monitoring and assistance with issues surrounding working memory and sustained attention). These are processes that are challenged but can be built during college and career experiences through guidance and mentoring.
We assist young people from the onset of the college, setting them up for success and stepping them through the first year experience and subsequent years’ requirements and related considerations. In addition to academic planning and support services, the socialization and involvement in campus activities is critical for the whole learner. Education and wellness need to be considered for a healthy experience. Mentors work to guide this process and accompany our young people on campus based on our Skills Development Plan (as Guidance Services and Civic Mentoring are blended). Sangha has contacts at various Long Island colleges with whom we coordinate.
The exposure to new concepts and access to diverse life experiences can be incorporated into goal setting and resumé building. Guidance is based on each individual’s strengths, interests, challenges, and needs while we help young people to find, formulate and follow their bliss! We meet each individual where they are in order that they learn, grow and thrive into adulthood.
Together, we use action-oriented problem solving to come up with solutions that assist our young people in overcoming obstacles and building skills to reach their full potential. Guidance Services are also offered to families. And, through training in the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) approach developed by Dr. Ross W. Greene via our Community Support Group and Educational Consulting & Training, we extend the learning to parents and professionals as they support and work with our youth.
