Week 2 Sessions

Monday, 7/15:
AM – Earth’s Crystals – History and Healing
PM – Sound Story SongMusical Instrument Collaboration

Portia Ingram will be with us again this summer to teach about the use of crystals, natural mineral formations, for healing. With referencing usage in cultures from around the world, she will make connections to today’s holistic understanding. We will see, touch, and feel specific crystals and discuss their associated meaning. This workshop will be followed by a musical experience with musician and vocalist, Lisa Mischke, who is also returning this summer to offer an interesting array of musical activity connecting humans to the natural world. Embark on a journey through the power of sound with instruments from various world cultures.

Wednesday, 7/17

AM – Live Marine Life Touch Tank
PM – How To Use Sound Vibrations and Energy for Self-Healing

We are excited to have The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay join us for a marine life education session with a touch tank filled with species from the local area to identify, handle, and explore in detail including learning about our natural water habitats and how to protect them and the life that they support. Then, during lunchtime, we are happy to have Laura Beatus offer Laughing Yoga which can decrease stress and enable a greater sense of well-being in alignment with our afternoon workshop where Reiki Master, Brenda Hohner, will educate participants about how to use sound vibrations and energy for self-healing. We will be provided with scientific background and insight about this wellness method followed by hands-on singing bowl experiences to extend the learning. We can make connections to the power of sound influencing marine life, too!

Friday, 7/19: ON FOR THIS WEEK…
AM – From the Earth to Our Skin
PM – Wood-Working WondersTables & Trays Custom Creations

During this special science activity we will learn about the landscape of our skin including some interesting fun facts from Steeve Sproul. Participants will be guided in developing their own skincare products out of organic plant matter to maintain healthy skin. In the afternoon, we will embark on Woodworking Wonders with Carpenter Malcolm Hall to build a “wood-working wonder”, a table-type of your choice to take home. We will be learning how to work with carpentry tools and assist one another! Painting or staining will be an option for our second session.

If needed, raindates are scheduled at the end of the season, Monday, 8/5 and/or Wednesday, 8/7.

About Summer at Sangha 2024

See all the Summer At The Sangha events >

During this 4-week summer general public program, teens and young adults with a range of abilities (in middle, high school, college and the workplace) are introduced to a sampling of hands-on, heart-centered nature and wellness community classes across various subject areas such as history, science, and creative art outlets. Games and team-building, too! Guided by our teachers, farmers, peer-mentors and community partners, participants come together for outdoor educational experiences, to enjoy camaraderie and minimize anxiety. Learn what diversity in nature has to teach through the exploration and discovery of plants, animals, land and water in our Long Island “learnscape”, connecting us as kin. Something for everyone! BYO lunch (water & snack available).
