Week 1 Sessions

Monday, 7/8:
AM – Shibori Japanese Tie-Dye Creations
PM – Meadow Farm Flower Planting & Art

We are excited to kick off our Summer at the Sangha season with Shibori, a thousand-year-old process that combines origami and tie-dye. We will learn different folding and Indigo dying techniques such as Kanoko, Miura, and Kumo from artist Oksana Danziger, to create stunning pieces. We will practice with fabric squares and then use items such as a shirt, scarf, or pillowcase (made of 100% cotton) to apply our newfound skill. **Please bring item of choice with you to this workshop. After lunch, we will take a nature walk to our Meadow Farm where we will embark on some light planting and/or art activities while learning through both native mythology and current scientific fun facts.

Wednesday, 7/10
:
AM – Our Earth’s Avengers: A Close Look at Insects of Asia
PM – Totem Pole Painting & Sealing

We are grateful for another Steeve Sproul workshop which brings science to life! We will be introduced to “Earth’s Avengers”, unusual and interesting insects of Asia. Participants may be surprised what they learn through video, games and/or hands-on experiences about an array of beings who make their home on Earth. In the afternoon, we will spend time outdoors to complete painting and sealing our Native American-inspired Totem Pole, learning about their origins and meaning. Indigenous cultures around the world have much to teach us through “phenomenology” where artistic creations provide lessons and insight.

Friday, 7/12:
AM – Forest Bathing Meditative Nature Exploration
PM – Herb Funshop Tea Making & Tasting

Forest Bathing with Stephanie Gaglione, Certified Nature Therapy Guide, will include ways in which to explore nature through a range of invitations providing creative and enjoyable sensory experiences around Historic Malcolm House on the Jericho Preserve to minimize anxiety and attain various health benefits including general calm and connection. We will conclude with Stephanie’s tea ceremony which we will learn more about in the afternoon with Ellen Khami’s Herb Funshop! Ellen will instruct us in making and tasting our own teas from herbs grown in our own backyard. Learning about the medicinal properties of plants will inspire the creation of our own herbal tea remedies. Samples to be taken home.

If needed, raindates are scheduled at the end of the season, Monday, 8/5 and/or Wednesday, 8/7.

Summer at the Sangha 2024

During this 4-week summer general public program, teens and young adults with a range of abilities (in middle, high school, college and the workplace) are introduced to a sampling of hands-on, heart-centered nature and wellness community classes across various subject areas such as history, science, and creative art outlets. Games and team-building, too! Guided by our teachers, farmers, peer-mentors and community partners, participants come together for outdoor educational experiences, to enjoy camaraderie and minimize anxiety. Learn what diversity in nature has to teach through the exploration and discovery of plants, animals, land and water in our Long Island “learnscape”, connecting us as kin. Something for everyone! BYO lunch (water & snack available).
