Our Project Stewardship young adults have enjoyed participating with Friends of the Bay for a beach clean-up. We will now participate in another beach clean-up, this time at Center Island Beach with other community groups. In addition, we are extending the outing to help the endangered Diamondback Terrapins through an important monitoring program run by Friends of the Bay. The Diamondback Terrapins are an iconic Long Island species and essential to maintain a balanced ecosystem. Terrapins are facing serious population decline and we can help.
The goal of this program is to monitor and record the distribution of Diamondback Terrapins in our region by recording any sign of terrapin presence. We will participate in monitoring training and be on the look out for terrapin friends! Please feel free to view this terrapin fact sheet prior to our outing. You may bring water and snack or lunch with you as we share beach-time together while helping the natural and living environment around us.
