SUMMARY:Marine Life Science and Sailboat Outing
DESCRIPTION:Photo by sailchristeen on Instagram\n\n\n\nThis month\, our Project Stewardship group will be visiting our community partner The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay. The WaterFront Center provides access to the waters of Oyster Bay Harbor and the Long Island Sound through their marine education programs\, recreational and instructional sailing programs\, boat rentals\, and harbor tours.  \n\n\n\nWe are excited to embark on a sailboat outing on the Christeen. The Christeen\, a 138-year-old\, 60-foot gaff-rigged sloop\, is the oldest oyster sloop in America and a National Historic Landmark. After a complete restoration\, Christeen launched in 1999 with a new mission to serve as a floating classroom for The WaterFront Center. Her US Coast Guard-licensed captains and volunteer crew carry more than 5\,000 people every year to educate them about maritime history\, marine science\, coastal ecology\, aquaculture\, and the oyster industry. \n\n\n\nWe will engage in a special science activity by catching and analyzing plankton under microscopes to detect the impact of climate change and learn about the chain reaction of marine life impacted by these global environmental changes. DESCRIPTION:Photo by: eMiL rAjAn\n\n\n\nJoin our Project Stewardship teen and young adult group for an outing to The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay for a guided kayak tour along the coast of Oyster Bay. This was such an enjoyable event last spring that our young people who participated asked if we can do it again. \n\n\n\nSingle and double kayaks are available. Kayaking and paddling are low-impact activities that improve fitness\, muscle strength & flexibility which can lead to cardiovascular benefits. And\, as stated on their website\, enabling “big smiles!” \n\n\n\nThe WaterFront Center is a non-profit organization located in Oyster Bay\, NY\, offering marine education and recreational & instructional sailing programs\, as well as paddleboard\, kayak\, and sailboat rentals. Our Project Stewardship group has also embarked on a wonderful harbor tour aboard the National Historic Landmark Oyster Sloop\, Christeen. WFC provides access to the waters of Oyster Bay Harbor and Long Island Sound through their marine education programs\, recreational and instructional sailing programs\, boat rentals\, and harbor tours. We will engage in a harbor tour to discover sea life via the National Historic Landmark Oyster Sloop\, The Christeen. We will discuss water pollution and take a plankton sample to view under microscopes and conduct a bottom dredge where the young adults can help go through the spoils of what is at the bottom of the harbor. Students will participate in measuring oysters and learn about the lifecycle of oysters and their importance to the estuary. Join us for a wonderful outdoor water adventure using a range of tools to locate\, safely capture and analyze our sea life findings!  Please arrive at 12:45pm to meet up in front of The WaterFront Center.
