SUMMARY:Friends of the Bay – Coastal Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Antoine GIRET on Unsplash\n\n\n\nOur Project Stewardship young adult group will be partnering with Friends of the Bay to participate with people around the globe for Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean-Up. During this outing our young people and others will work together to clean-up the beach area along the North Shore between Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. We will contribute to positive environmental impact and the protection of wildlife who often ingest the plastics found on the beaches and in our waters. Those interested can complete data sheets to provide insights on debris findings to Ocean Conservancy. We are grateful to Friends of the Bay for visiting with us this summer and are happy to collaborate. Participants may bring water\, snack and sunblock. You may also bring a towel and/or beach chair\, if you would like. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at Stehli Beach (see below). Please contact Christine Keller’s cell at 516-384-9205 if you have difficulty finding the beach. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Meadow Farm Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Spring 2022 as we move forward with our Meadow Farm development! This will include the Seed Start Garden & Library spear-headed by Farmer Regina\, the Medicine Wheel Garden designed by our young adult program participants and a Kindness [flower] Garden with its anti-bullying theme. All toward the education and well-being of all! \n\n\n\nCreative ideas are to be implemented during a range of projects where there is something for everyone to do! During the Spring and Fall seasons\, community volunteer days are scheduled once monthly – on Saturdays or Sundays from 10:30am-12:30pm. Plant & Learn educational workshops are offered on certain Saturdays (1-3pm) for those who can stay to attend. During July into first part of August\, we will hold summer volunteer hours once per week from 10:30am-12:30pm (dates to be announced). \n\n\n\nVolunteer days are weather-dependent. Therefore\, if there is light rain\, we are on! If there is a rain storm\, we will cancel. Based on weather\, some volunteer days may be on the grounds around historic Malcolm House. We are excited for the involvement of the local Long Island community in addition to our program participants\, their families\, friends and schools for outdoor project-based learning experiences! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Volunteer Registration—6/26/22\n \n $0.00\n \n Add to cart

We will engage in a harbor tour to discover sea life via the National Historic Landmark Oyster Sloop\, The Christeen. We will discuss water pollution and take a plankton sample to view under microscopes and conduct a bottom dredge where the young adults can help go through the spoils of what is at the bottom of the harbor. Students will participate in measuring oysters and learn about the lifecycle of oysters and their importance to the estuary. Join us for a wonderful outdoor water adventure using a range of tools to locate\, safely capture and analyze our sea life findings!  Please arrive at 12:45pm to meet up in front of The WaterFront Center. Wear sneakers and you may bring a bag with water\, lunch or snack. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:CPS Plans\, Steps & Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our Community Support Group this month with Dr. Lisa LoPinto who will review the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) approach – Plans and Steps in relation to Self-Care! CPS was developed by Dr. Ross W. Greene to assist families and schools in working with young people to solve problems and build skills\, minimizing challenging behavior.  The CPS Plans and Steps provide a framework to not take on more than anyone can handle. Selecting specific problems situations to address over others involves personal priorities.  And “Plan C’ing” other problems or putting them on-hold for the time-being\, provides room for everyone to take care of themselves while still moving forward with problem solving.  Whether it be during the COVID-19 pandemic or beyond\, it is helpful to learn how to work together towards common goals as we navigate difficult experiences. And we will introduce the field Positive Psychology\, delving deeper at our next Community Support Group meeting\, to introduce opportunities to move away from learned helplessness to learned optimism and improve resilience which an be combined with and/or complement the CPS approach. This is an open forum to answer questions and address issues of importance to attendees. Parents and professional as well as high school or college students welcome! Dr. LoPinto is a clinical psychologist in private practice who also offers a 10-week CPS Parent Skills classes seasonally.  She is a certified CPS provider/trainer who consults with\, trains and offers school district supervisions in the CPS approach.NOTE: We have moved “Kids Who Fall Through the Cracks” to September. And we will be doing a full group meeting in May about moving from learned helplessness to learned optimism based on tips from the field of Positive Psychology. \n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Community Support Group\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Handy-Craft Day at Malcolm House
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Daniel Guerra on Unsplash\n\n\n\nHarkening back to an age-old time where handy-crafts were the only method for creating what one needed whether it be clothes\, tools\, toys\, wooden items used for household purposes\, or decorative pieces for celebrations\, our Project Stewardship young adults will embark on a handy-craft day with two of our wonderful community partners. Learn how different cultures perceive the world they live in and express themselves through their art and handy-crafts. \n\n\n\nMalcolm Hall will be with us to assemble and start painting the totem pole we have been working on for our Meadow Farm. We will see some antique spinning wheels and embark on the yarn and wool spinning process with Diane Pionegro\, making useful items for home and enjoyment. We will also have the opportunity to try needlepoint and/or use a loom for design work. Games to be played as well! Join us! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Meadow Farm Volunteer Day (CANCELLED due to weather)
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Volunteer Registration—3/12/2022\n \n $0.00\n \n Add to cart

SUMMARY:Artists Come Alive
DESCRIPTION:Our Project Stewardship young adult group will participate with Spirit of Huntington Arts Center for a special painting workshop as part of Artists Come Alive via ZOOM. Canvasses will be used and can be offered as gifts to family members or friends! In this expressive art program\, students discover art styles through the lives of famous artists as they express themselves. Students learn through an interactive slide show presentation and stories then creating their own masterpieces emulating that artist’s style. The history of the artist’s life including any challenges which they overcame through their art is discussed. Classes are processed-based and developmentally appropriate. \n\n\n\nThe artist we will learn from and emulate is James Rizzi: \n\n\n\n… James Rizzi’s pictures almost burst with New York City imagery: cars and cabbies\, hot dog booths and the Hudson\, the Guggenheim Museum and Central Park\, the Brooklyn Bridge and Broadway. We see illuminated advertising\, streets full of houses\, street signs\, fire hydrants\, and dustbins. Above all\, however\, we see people\, people and even more people. After all\, it is the people you meet in the streets who give New York its particular flavor. “Much of my work is about New York City\, but above all it is about the people\, about how they live. New York is a multicultural society where people with all kinds of cultural backgrounds\, religions and languages are living together in harmony. In my work I want to portray the positive side of New York\, I want to show how privileged we are to have such a rich and diverse society and that living together in such a community can be a lot of fun.” Rizzi’s pictures show New York as a social example the world might wish to follow. \n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Kids Who Fall Through the Cracks – Presentation & Open Forum
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Simon Rae on Unsplash\n\n\n\nThis interactive presentation challenges the one-size-fits-all approach to teaching\, learning and behavior. We will discuss Kids Who Fall Through The Cracks and the importance of a “whole-child” approach that enables students to find personal meaning in learning\, grow at their developmental pace\, and cultivate a feeling of self-worth for who they are and how they learn. \n\n\n\nParticipants will… \n\n\n\n– Gain an understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)\, creating an environment where all students can flourish– Value the need for a supportive environment that promotes strong relationships among staff\, students\, and families– Learn about “community\, exposure and opportunity” for well-rounded\, student-centered\, applied learning experiences– See how strength-based\, engaging instructional practices can develop students’ ability to manage their own learning– Review how to initiate skill building through the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) approach to solve problems with our youth– Come to understand habits\, skills\, and mindsets that develop students’ social\, emotional\, and academic competence rather than years of learned helplessness– Be provided with information about educational tools and methods that customize the learning and production process including Self-Regulated Strategies Development (SRSD) \n\n\n\nThis is an open forum to answer questions and to guide parents and professionals. \n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Community Support Group\, please register using the “Member” registration below.
