SUMMARY:Summer at the Sangha 2026 - Week 4
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Alexia Luyt on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWeek 4 Sessions\n\n\n\nMONDAY JULY 27THAM – LI History In Your Own Backyard – Women & Abolition with Thereze Madison\, History Educator \n\n\n\nSangha Education Center is excited to introduce another one of four Long Island History In Your Own Backyard inclusive community classes. We will conclude this summer with Women and Abolition. Through family ties\, friendships\, and a shared mission\, Quaker women have worked together with others to assist enslaved people throughout history\, including as abolitionists and educators in secret charity schools and in other capacities connected to the Underground Railroad. Today\, we will embark on an educational presentation and activities at Historic Malcolm House that shed light on the life and work of such women. Thereze Madison\, Public School Educator and History Enthusiast\, will guide this educational experience.PM – Cold Porcelain Claywork Painting & Decorating with Ester de la Fuente\, Artist & Yoga Instructor \n\n\n\nNow that the cold porcelain claywork designs made earlier in July have fully dried\, we will embark on another class with community partner and artist Esther de la Fuente of IndigoAzul29 to paint and decorate our pendants\, ring dishes\, or keychain holder designs. The nature textures used will prompt creativity as we utilize acrylic paint\, beach glass\, beads\, and other elements to make our creations truly our own. These beautiful and practical items can be keepsakes or gift items resembling real porcelain. Esther’s guidance will encourage subsequent cold porcelain claywork undertakings that participants may do at home or in future Sangha classes where more advanced artwork can broaden their skills. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEDNESDAY JULY 29TH \n\n\n\nAM – Oyster Raising in Oyster Bay with The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay \n\n\n\nWe are grateful to The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay for bringing a new class to us this summer. Today\, we will learn about how to raise oysters for continued health and clean waters within Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor. Oysters were endangered\, and efforts on behalf of many on the North Shore of Long Island led to their ability to remain an integral part of our ecosystem. Important concepts will be discussed about the life-cycle of oysters\, we will embark on cage-building\, as well as sorting and cleaning oysters\, and learning why this is critical to the local oyster population\, our waters\, and the eco-health of the entire system. In the future\, we may choose to volunteer with The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay to help clean oyster cages and embark on other supportive functions with Friends of the Bay. \n\n\n\nPM – Our Long Island Waters Then and Now with Christine Keller\, Educator\, and Brian Autar\, Mentor \n\n\n\nSome may be aware that our Long Island home has a very unique geography\, and important water resources that were shaped about 21\,000 years ago during the last ice age. In today’s class\, we will learn about the two massive glacial drifts and moraines—the Ronkonkoma and Harbor Hill Moraines that created the landmass on which we live. We will explore the North Shore and South Shore features and the underground aquifers\, groundwater\, and the history of the L.I. Sound that comprise the ecosystem and water we need to survive. Through hands-on model making and experimentation\, we will see how the ongoing evolution of land and water works together\, and the human awareness that is necessary for its future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRIDAY JULY 31STAM – The History and Science of Soap Making with Steeve Sproul\, STEM Educator Has anyone ever wondered where soap comes from or how it works? During this class\, participants will learn about the history\, science\, and interesting fun facts related to soap making and usage in cultures from around the world\, starting with ancient Babylonians and Egyptians to the Romans through the Middle Ages\, and during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th-19th centuries. We will then embark on a related science experiment and create bars of soap to take home. In addition to making the soap itself\, there will be an option to add natural decorative elements. Come enjoy learning about the importance of soap making and embark on the process with others.PM – Magnifying Technology and Patterns in Nature with Steeve Sproul\, STEM Educator\, and Brian Autar\, Mentor \n\n\n\nMagnifying tools can reveal the hidden mathematical wisdom at work in nature\, allowing us to see how microscopic structures form complex\, repeating designs of fractals (ferns and snowflakes)\, spirals (nautilus shells and scales of pinecones)\, and symmetry (butterflies and leaves)\, based on number sequences that provide scientists with profound blueprints for technological innovation. Today\, we will learn about these hidden patterns in nature and use various magnifying tools such as a hand-held magnifying glass\, a miniature zoom lens for an iPhone\, and a microscope to explore concepts such as the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio\, the mathematical sequences\, and rules that govern biological growth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSummer at the Sangha 2026\n\n\n\nSee all the Summer at the Sangha events > \n\n\n\nDuring this 4-week general public program\, teens and young adults with a range of abilities (in middle\, high school\, college\, and the workplace) are introduced to a sampling of hands-on\, heart-centered inclusive community classes with nature & wellness themes including history\, culture\, science\, and creative arts. There is a morning and an afternoon class each day. Games and team-building take place during lunch in between sessions. Guided by our skilled teachers\, farmers\, peer-mentors and community partners\, participants come together for outdoor educational experiences\, enjoy camaraderie\, and minimize anxiety. Wonderful opportunities to learn what diversity in nature has to teach through the exploration and discovery of plants\, animals\, land and water in our Long Island “learnscape”\, connecting us as kin. Something for everyone! BYO lunch (water & snack available). AC indoors. \n\n\n\nDownload the Summer At The Sangha 2026 flyer > \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nRegister for Summer at the Sangha with our flexible 3-day bundle\, by the week\, or for the whole summer\, which includes all four weeks. SUMMARY:Summer at the Sangha 2026 - Week 3
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWeek 3 Sessions\n\n\n\nMONDAY JULY 20THAM – Live Animal Education Experience with Sweetbriar Nature CenterWe are privileged to have Sweetbriar Nature Center with us again this summer. Sweetbriar provides natural science education for Long Island residents of all ages and engages in native wildlife rehabilitation services. They promote appreciation and respect for the unique wildlife and ecosystems found on Long Island. During today’s session\, Sweetbriar will introduce participants to various animals who reside at their center\, offer hands-on touch\, and discuss details about animal attributes\, behavior\, and habitats. We welcome this educational opportunity whereby Sweetbriar Nature Center staff shares their insights about the wildlife in our midst. We look forward to a visit with mammals and reptiles alike! \n\n\n\nPM – Reiki and Sound Healing Methods with Brenda Hohner\, Reiki Master \n\n\n\nDuring our afternoon class\, Reiki Master\, Brenda Hohner\, will educate participants about how to use sound vibrations and energy for self-healing. Sound healing is a holistic\, non-invasive practice that uses specific tones\, frequencies\, and rhythmic vibrations from instruments like crystal singing bowls\, gongs\, and chimes to promote deep relaxation and ease stress. We will be provided with scientific information and insights about various wellness methods\, be shown how to handle sound instruments\, and then have a singing bowl demonstration and experience to extend the learning. We can make connections to the power of sound influencing marine life and other organisms on Earth\, too. We are grateful to have Brenda back again this year! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEDNESDAY JULY 22ND \n\n\n\nAM – Frida Kahlo Art & Spanish Inspiration with Jeanette Morales-Rodriguez\, Educator \n\n\n\nWe are happy to offer a class based on the amazing life and work of artist Frida Kahlo! Join Jeanette Morales-Rodriguez\, SUNY Old Westbury MALS graduate and Spanish teacher\, who will facilitate this unique educational opportunity to celebrate the artist and activist Frida Kahlo. Participants will be introduced to Frida’s life and art and inspired by her philosophical life lessons taught to us in English and Spanish. Enjoy creating your own artwork\, including a self-portrait based on Frida’s artistic creations. There is much that art history and education have to teach. \n\n\n\nPM – Drumming Circle Culture Comes Alive with Drumming Facilitators\, Malcolm Hall and Rob GuardioWe welcome participants to embark on the joy of drumming as we co-create rhythms using drums and other percussion instruments\, guided by Malcolm and Rob. This hands-on community class is inspired by drumming in indigenous cultures of the world. Drumming circles are communal in nature\, serving as a group conversation\, allowing everyone to be heard. Facilitators start with a simple\, steady beat and together form patterns as others participate based on how they feel\, going with and contributing to the group rhythm. Malcolm brings extensive drumming experience from his indigenous Gyanese culture and professional music and theatre experience to teach our program participants the history of drumming circles\, and Rob will share his personal experience to shed light on drumming as a therapeutic outlet\, which can reduce stress and boost the immune system. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRIDAY JULY 24THAM – Medicine Wheel Herb Garden & Legend Learning with Christine Keller\, Educator and Rob Guardio\, Mentor \n\n\n\nDuring this morning’s session\, we will take the nature trail to our Meadow Farm\, where we will spend time learning about the history\, meaning\, and medicinal properties behind special herbs to be planted in our Medicine Wheel Herb Garden. We will begin by listening to the Penobscot Legend about Arrowhead Finger to set the stage for being caretakers for one another and Earth\, understanding the role plants play in the process. We will then consider a garden design suitable for these special herbs and proceed with a planting experience. Learning in theory and practice is an educational method helpful for all involved. \n\n\n\nPM – Paint Dyeing with Magical Indigo Leaves with Bernadette Puleo\, Indigo Artist \n\n\n\nThis afternoon\, Bernadette Puleo of Indigo Garden Arts will lead us in using leaves of the Japanese Indigo plant and a sprinkle of salt to dye silk purses and scarves. Bernadette will explain the history of indigo dyeing\, a universal practice that has been used to dye textiles for over 6\,000 years\, with various techniques developing in different places over time. Participants will experience one of those dying techniques. Then we will proceed to stencil or hammer the newly dyed purses and scarves with a design using Indigo pigment\, sediment that has settled at the bottom of jars for this purpose\, or by using rolled-up Indigo leaves\, experimenting with color. We will experience the magic of Indigo\, creating beautiful patterns that are uniquely ours. SUMMARY:Summer at the Sangha 2026 - Week 2
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Esther de la Fuente on Instagram\n\n\n\nWeek 2 Sessions\n\n\n\nMONDAY JULY 13THAM – Cold Porcelain Claywork Making with Ester de la Fuente\, Artist & Yoga Instructor \n\n\n\nWe welcome one of our more recent community partners\, Esther de la Fuente of IndigoAzul29\, who creates jewelry and pottery inspired by nature to help cultivate our artistic abilities through cold porcelain claywork making\, design\, and painting over three sessions. Cold porcelain is a versatile\, air-dry modeling clay made primarily from cornstarch\, glue\, and oil. Its durable and smooth finish is perfect for sculpting and jewelry making! Once fully dry\, it hardens to resemble traditional porcelain but is lightweight and shatter-resistant. Esther will guide us in cold porcelain making by mixing and cooking the different materials\, followed by product design making! PM – Cold Porcelain Claywork Design with Ester de la Fuente\, Artist & Yoga Instructor \n\n\n\nDuring our afternoon session\, we will select items with textures from outdoors in nature and from samples brought in by Esther to create our own unique pendants\, ring dishes\, or keychain holder designs. The cold porcelain claywork making process requires instruction on handling the clay after it’s cooked and cooled and ways in which to create various patterns. Strings and chains will be provided and added to the clay based on each design choice. Once fully dry\, we will paint and decorate our creations during our third session on 7/27. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEDNESDAY JULY 15TH \n\n\n\nAM – Marine Life Education & Touch Tank with The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay  \n\n\n\nWe are excited to have The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay with us once again for a marine life education session that includes a touch tank filled with various invertebrate that inhabit the local waters of Oyster Bay and the Long Island Sound. Participants will handle and identify different species and explore their characteristics\, learning about locomotion\, feeding behavior\, and habitats. In addition\, come to understand how we can protect our waters and marine life. Species usually consist of clams\, oysters\, hermit crabs\, spider crabs\, sea stars\, horseshoe crabs\, and more. These interesting creatures are interdependent in our ecosystem(s)\, and we can take part in further discovery through an outing to The WaterFront Center and Friends of the Bay during the Fall or Spring seasons.PM – Expressing Yourself Through Mixed Media Collage with Gae Polisner\, Attorney\, Writer\, and Artist \n\n\n\nGae Polisner is an attorney and author of seven award-winning novels for young readers. Gae’s most recent endeavor\, developed during the COVID-19 Pandemic\, is a unique form of collaging which she refers to as “Lyric Collage” that has also won her several awards\, including from the prestigious Art League of Long Island. She will be sharing her talent and creativity with us today. This class is intended for every level of artist. Through the combining of pre-existing images\, including those in nature with oil crayon\, found poetry\, and more\, participants will be inspired to create a vibrant and distinctive work of personal expression. Covering basic concepts of color\, contrast\, and technique\, all of those involved will create works that bring their worldview or current mood to the canvas\, whatever form that canvas takes. Examples of Gae’s art will be brought in for viewing so that how this unique art form takes shape becomes clear\, serving as a base for participants’ vision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRIDAY JULY 17THAM – Modge Podge Art Enchantments with Christine Keller\, Educator and Rob Gaudio\, Mentor \n\n\n\nThe magic of Modge Podge alone has a way of enhancing art with either a matte or glossy finish that helps designs come to life. But we will be creating “art enchantments” by using Modge Podge and various craft supplies to mystically elevate the scenes of our Mixed Media Collages completed with Gae Polisner. A sparkle here\, a 3D flower there\, a charm or drop of color on a black and white piece\, creates the ambience that enables the piece to feel enchanted! These finishing touches on our collages will demonstrate how to take art to a different level. Gae will provide insight and examples from her work\, and we will determine how to incorporate these ideas into our own art. \n\n\n\nPM – Remember Liss: A New American Founding Figure with Claire Bellerjeau\, Historian & Author  \n\n\n\nJoin historian and author Claire Bellerjeau for this impactful community class as she shares her discovery of a new American founding figure named Elizabeth\, or Liss\, for whom her book Remember Liss is dedicated. Liss was enslaved by the Townsend family of Oyster Bay and Jericho\, New York – including by James Townsend\, who once lived in part of Malcolm House. The most famous member of the Townsend family was Robert Townsend\, aka “Culper\, Jr.”\, George Washington’s lead spy in Manhattan during the Revolutionary War\, as retold in Espionage and Enslavement in the Revolution. Liss’s escape from Oyster Bay with the British during the Revolutionary War\, re-enslavement in Manhattan and later Charleston\, and her complex struggle for freedom give new insight into the country’s founding era through the eyes of an enslaved Black woman seeking liberty in a country fighting for its own. Participants will learn about techniques used by the spies\, including invisible ink\, the Culper Code\, and other methods of secret communication. Today\, we will embark on an educational presentation\, interactive activity\, and historic walking tour of the Quaker Meeting House and cemetery across the street from our center at Historic Malcolm House.  \n\n\n\nPM – Nerf Teams\, Tag\, and Target Lessons with Brian Autar\, Mentor \n\n\n\nWe are excited to facilitate a request from program participants to offer a second class session of Nerf Teams\, Tag\, and Target Lessons. Based on the creation of previously built barriers and target boards\, we will break into teams and build visual-motor skills through target practice with soft Nerf darts. Participants will also embark on a team-building opportunity through tag strategy options developed and guided by Brian Autar and others. Combining education and skill-building\, young people will learn while enjoying this guided outdoor adventure on the premises of Historic Malcolm House. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEDNESDAY JULY 8TH \n\n\n\nAM – Medicine Wheel Garden Signs & Ceremony with Christine Keller\, Educator\, and Malcolm Hall\, Carpenter \n\n\n\nWe are excited to explore ancient Medicine Wheel teachings in certain Native American cultures and relate their application to the world today to bring balance and harmony to our lives. We will embark on hands-on activities in the Medicine Wheel Garden at our Meadow Farm\, including the installation of kiosk signs and the specific placement of colored rocks that have symbolic meaning. Participants will take part in reading the messages the wheel has to teach\, and form the circle with mosaic tile stepping stones they made last year. Lastly\, all will partake in a dedication ceremony\, applying what we have learned about the history of the Medicine Wheel\, leaving the Meadow set up as our own sacred space to honor our ancestors and inspire future generations. \n\n\n\nPM – More Woodworking Wonders with Malcolm Hall\, Carpenter \n\n\n\nWe are happy\, as always\, to have our community partner and carpenter friend\, Malcolm Hall\, back with us to create more woodworking wonders! Malcolm will guide us in making uniquely lettered inspirational signs. We will select and sand wood pieces and choose from a grab bag of wisdom sayings or determine our own to be painted onto the appropriate-sized wood piece. We will be instructed in the art of decorative lettering and apply what we learn on our signs (one to take home and another for the Meadow Farm). Lastly\, we will leave them to dry and seal them at a later date. This hands-on learning experience combines philosophy and art\, building critical thinking skills while enjoying time with peers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRIDAY JULY 10THAM – Humorous Animal Homes & Habitats with Steeve Sproul\, STEM Educator \n\n\n\nHave you ever wondered who builds palaces on cliffs or who lurks in the deepest point on Earth? Learn about some of the weirdest and wildest animal homes. Explore extreme conditions and the extraordinary animal friends who can live in them. During this class\, STEM Educator Steeve Sproul will explore a range of humorous animal homes and habitats that will impress and surprise us. Animals of the globe are an important part of our ecosystem. We will take a look at the places where they flourish and the results of their successes.   \n\n\n\nPM – Sound Story Song Musical Storytelling with Lisa Mischke\, Vocalist & Musician  \n\n\n\nDuring our afternoon session\, we welcome back Lisa Mischke\, musician and vocalist\, for a unique musical storytelling class. Lisa will offer an interesting array of musical activities connecting humans to the natural world\, providing an educational framework that incorporates the power of sound as we learn about and actively engage with instruments from various world cultures. Instruments include a harp\, whose origins evolved across diverse cultures over time; the Indian harmonium\, originating in West Bengal; and several other special instruments\, one for each participant. The culminating story will be an education in itself\, providing a deeper understanding of the power of sound in community collaboration. SUMMARY:Our Relationship with Food - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Spencer Davis on Unsplash\n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, we have to cancel this class\, but we may offer something similar during the Spring 2027 season. \n\n\n\nWe are excited to have Debra Spector\, MS\, RDN\, CDN\, who is a Registered and Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist\, with us at Sangha Education Center this season for an inclusive community class open to the general public for all to learn from and enjoy.  \n\n\n\nDebra will utilize her expertise to teach participants about “Our Relationship with Food\,” which impacts all of us differently. Young people and other community members attending can learn how to eat in a way that is helpful and healthy. We will participate in a guided discussion where we come to understand typical vs. disordered eating and how an eating disorder doesn’t “have a look” a certain way. In addition\, we can come to realize that foods aren’t necessarily “good” or “bad”. I am sure that everyone will be happy to see that there is a way to make “all foods fit” and that we can develop our relationship with food. \n\n\n\nFollowing Debra’s workshop\, we will embark on a surprise food sampling to expand our exposure to food with something for everyone (including gluten-free options). We look forward to Q&A and sharing thoughts about what we’ve learned while appreciating food together. \n\n\n\nMore about our guest speaker… Debra Spector has a private practice on Long Island\, NY (est. 1990) where she specializes in eating disorders and other clinical disease states. An important element of her practice is the philosophy of the anti-diet movement and body size acceptance. She is thrilled that her award-winning book: “The Things I’ve Seen People Do With and Without Food” has helped people gain a better understanding of the internal struggles that many who have eating disorders face and she continues to look forward to assisting our local community. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Frida Kahlo - Art & Spanish Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWe are happy to offer an inclusive community class for teens and young adults as part of our Project Stewardship program\, based on the amazing life and work of artist Frida Kahlo! Join Jeanette Morales-Rodriguez\, SUNY Old Westbury MALS candidate and Spanish teacher\, who will offer a unique educational opportunity to celebrate the artist and activist Frida Kahlo. Participants will be introduced to Frida’s life and art and be inspired by her philosophical life lessons taught to us in English and Spanish. Enjoy creating your own artwork\, including a self-portrait based on Frida’s artistic creations. \n\n\n\nAbout Frida Kahlo (1907-1954): Frida was a renowned Mexican painter famous for her vibrant\, deeply personal\, and often surreal self-portraits exploring themes of identity\, pain\, postcolonialism\, and gender\, using Mexican folk art styles to represent her turbulent life\, chronic physical suffering from polio and a severe bus accident\, and her tumultuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera. She became a feminist icon and cultural symbol after her death\, celebrated for her unflinching portrayal of her inner world and resilience in the face of adversity. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Positive Psychology for Heart & Mind – Part 2 - POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Katrina Wright on Unsplash\n\n\n\nIn this two-part workshop\, participants will have an opportunity to discuss their experiences\, areas of concern\, and triumphs in managing their personal lives or professional roles over the past few years. This dialogue exchange and interactive presentation will be guided by educator/adjunct professor Christine Keller\, M.A.\, M.S.Ed.\, who will apply concepts in Positive Psychology and the goals and values that enable individuals\, organizations\, schools\, and overall communities to thrive and address burnout and other vicarious trauma. \n\n\n\nPositive Psychology is “a branch of psychology focused on character strengths and behaviors that allow individuals to build a life of meaning and purpose—to move beyond surviving to flourishing” (Martin Seligman\, Author of Learned Optimism\, considered to be the father of the field of Positive Psychology). The purpose\, basic framework\, and methods used in Positive Psychology will be explored\, including an understanding of Learned Optimism vs. Learned Helplessness\, yielding positive outcomes despite circumstances. Concepts in Positive Psychology have also been influenced by eastern philosophy related to Sukkha (happiness) and Dukkha (suffering)\, which will be expanded upon to provide clarity in enabling peace of mind for self and others. \n\n\n\nA take-home exercise will be provided to reflect\, connect\, reduce stress\, and build resilience between sessions. And also to expand compassion and develop insight. Experiences will be discussed during the second session. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nVirtual Event via Zoom.
