Single and double kayaks are available. Kayaking and paddling are low-impact activities that improve fitness\, strength\, and flexibility which can lead to cardiovascular benefits and muscle strength. And\, as stated on their website\, “big smiles!” The WaterFront Center is a non-profit organization located in Oyster Bay\, NY\, offering marine education programs and recreational and instructional sailing programs\, paddle board\, kayak\, and sailboat rentals\, and harbor tours aboard the National Historic Landmark Oyster Sloop\, Christeen. Our Project Stewardship teen and young adult group is excited to return to Sweetbriar for this SPECIAL EVENT… Annual Butterfly and Bird Festival and the seasonal opening of the Butterfly Vivarium. SUMMARY:2024 Diversity Summit
DESCRIPTION:Advocating\, Celebrating\, Educating! Women’s Diversity Network will hold its sixth annual Summit. This day-long event will include workshops\, panels\, and presentations on a variety of diversity-related topics. Throughout the day\, there will also be multicultural performances as well as a luncheon that reflects the diversity of the day. SUMMARY:Raynham Hall History Tour
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Raynham Hall Museum\n\n\n\nOur Project Stewardship teen and young adult group will embark on a local history journey at nearby Raynham Hall Museum\, home of the Townsend family and those enslaved there during the Revolutionary War. Some were involved in George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. We will view the exhibit hall\, be guided through this historic home and provided with details of daily life there during the 18th and 19th centuries (1:00-2:30pm).  \n\n\n\nRaynham Hall and those living there were connected to Historic Malcolm House\, the location of our Sangha Education Center on the Jericho Preserve. We can discuss some of this history following the tour as we have a snack at a local eatery (2:30-3:30pm). Sacred Geometry is often referred to as the “architecture of the universe\,” found throughout nature\, and understood as a deep philosophical concept in cultures around the world.  \n\n\n\nThere will be an interactive presentation where we will learn about the aesthetic\, metaphysical\, mathematical\, and musical beauty of Sacred Geometry! As we explore some of these patterns in nature including in the solar system which became important symbols for ancient people\, we will reflect on their application today!  \n\n\n\nParticipants will take part in hands-on art and science activities from sacred geometry in addition to others of their choice as we discuss these concepts. There will be take home “Sacred Geometry Jars” with a chosen symbol and intention. DESCRIPTION:Oksana Fiber Studio\n\n\n\nWe are privileged to have artist Oksana Danziger with us again\, this time to introduce program participants to Nuno Felting! Nuno Felting is a fabric felting technique developed by Polly Stirling\, a fiber artist from New South Wales\, Australia\, around 1992. The name “Nuno” is derived from Japanese (布) and means cloth. \n\n\n\nThis mixed media art combines wool with other fibers such as silk\, to create lightweight but sturdy fabrics that are especially good for fashion. In this workshop we will make purses\, cell phone or eyeglass cases and learn the basic principles of Nuno Felting which can then be applied new creative designs. \n\n\n\nNuno Felt is like a silk gauze that is gaining popularity amongst felters and often used for light summer dresses\, shawls\, scarves\, skirts\, shorts\, book bags\, pencil cases\, etc. Almost any material can be used as long as it is thin enough. Come learn how to recycle fabric materials and manifest ideas for future creations. No previous skill necessary. We will meet a representative who will bring a guide dog and describe the history and impact of their offering. This is a huge undertaking and the skills needed by trainers\, participants in the program\, and dogs alike are amazing. Meet these wonderful canine friends and learn about their training\, daily responsibilities\, and relationships with the individuals who they service. \n\n\n\nIn 1946\, when the Guide Dog Foundation was founded\, its mission was simple: to provide guide dogs and training – free of charge – to people who were blind or have low vision. For more than 75 years\, the Guide Dog Foundation has trained and placed guide dogs and service dogs to provide increased independence and enhanced mobility to individuals who are blind\, have low vision\, or other disabilities. The organization began after WWII to assist Veterans returning from war and has extended their services to many others over the years.  \n\n\n\nWe will also assist Guide Dog Foundation via donations of items on their product donation wish list. A $15 will be added to your cart for this purpose. During Roosevelt’s time in office\, his “Summer White House” was the focus of international attention. There are 83 acres of natural surroundings\, historic buildings and trails that are inspired by the legacy of one of America’s most popular presidents. We will tour the main house\, see historic artifacts and learn from the impact of this important historic figure\, hear stories offered by our tour guide and we will visit the Old Orchard Museum. Stay tuned for rescheduled date. \n\n\n\nOur Project Stewardship teens and young adults will enjoy a boat trip with an Operation Splash Captain Anthony Vecchione and crew to clean marine debris from the South Shore Bay inlets. Operation Splash is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to improving the quality of Long Island’s south shore bays\, waterways\, and beaches. Operation Splash members actively carry out this mission through marine debris cleanups\, advocacy efforts\, and STEM-based education programs for schools and universities. Register soon as boat capacity is limited.  \n\n\n\nSince its founding in 1990\, Operation Splash members have removed more than three million pounds of trash from local waters and their work has influenced environmental legislation aimed at improving marine environments. DESCRIPTION:Our Project Stewardship program teens and young adults will enjoy time together on a guided nature walk at Mill Pond Preserve (Bellmore/Wantagh). We will learn about the history of this special place in relation to this area of the South Shore. On our walk\, we can apply the Forest Bathing skills we have practiced on the Jericho Preserve and apply them to new\, natural surroundings and take in life all around us. We encourage our young people to make these nature connections more regularly\, integrating these sensory experiences into their lives for increased health and well-being. We will conclude with time for socialization during lunch at Stella’s (next door to the preserve). Young people are to be dropped off and picked up between Stella’s and Mill Pond Preserve (along Merrick Road). SUMMARY:Dungeons & Dragons Series
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Clint Bustrillos on Unsplash\n\n\n\nOur program participants have truly enjoyed our seasonal Dungeons & Dragons events. Therefore\, we are now introducing regular Dungeons & Dragons series as an add-on to our Project Stewardship program. Dungeon Master\, Scott is also an artist. He will combine game play and artistic creation throughout each season. Group storytelling will take on different formats including nature themes! Imaginative play is encouraged with current props and sets as well as new creations. Activity stations will be set up outdoors when warmer weather permits. We also plan to have our original Dungeon Master John back to visit with us this season or next. There will be something for everyone! SUMMARY:Night of Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Greg Rakozy on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWe are excited to embark on an Astronomy Workshop Series based on the interests and requests of our Project Stewardship program participants! We will begin this month with a night of observation with Amateur Observers’ Society of New York (AOSNY) to identify celestial properties within the Spring night sky and skygazing opportunities with member telescopes of all types and sizes enabling us to pursue our astronomy interests. AOSNY was established in 1965 as a means for astronomy enthusiasts of all ages to meet together\, provide astronomy resources and educate the public. They offer numerous stargazing activities and are involved with reducing the light pollution problem on Long Island and throughout NYS. \n\n\n\nDuring Summer at the Sangha\, will offer an Introduction to Astronomy and Cosmology based on the scientific developments of cultures around the world and their application to humanities lived experiences past and present to continue the learning on this fascinating range of topics and how the stars and planets have provided guidance in so many ways.In September\, we are happy to welcome the Astronomical Society of Long Island (ASLI) to provide us with insights revolving around telescopic technology and an observation of the moon\, Jupiter and Saturn which can only be seen during the Fall season.
