SUMMARY:Vision Boarding for the New Year
DESCRIPTION:Photo by freepik\n\n\n\nA vision board is a collage of images\, words\, and affirmations that represent your dreams\, goals\, and desires. It’s a visual representation or roadmap of how you envision your best life\, helping you to manifest it. Making a vision board is meant to excite you about the future.  \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will be taking a unique approach to vision boarding by first learning a bit about Feng Shui and the Bagua. The Bagua (or parts of your house or room that have symbolic meaning) will be used as a template for the physical board and placement of images\, words\, and affirmations on it. We will discuss our thoughts and ideas as a group\, list out some of the specifics to organize ourselves\, create our vision board\, and share our final products. Our goal is that this exercise inspire and aid our Project Stewardship teens and young adults in building thinking and planning skills towards creating the reality of their dreams.  \n\n\n\nPlease feel free to give some thought to areas of your life in alignment with the Bagua (i.e.\, creativity\, helpful people and travel\, health\, relationships\, prosperity\, reputation\, family) and bring in related images from magazines or internet printouts to have them available and possibly to paste on your board. Hernandez\, and Manuel Alejandro Macarrulla and Latino Moms Connect\, Inc.  \n\n\n\nEnjoy learning about this special holiday and how it is celebrated around the world. Create colorful works of art inspired by the celebration and collaborating artists. As part of this tradition\, bring something personal to leave at the museum ofrenda to honor and remember loved ones.  \n\n\n\nActivities throughout the day will include mask-making\, designing your own memorial\, flower-making\, face painting\, and more. This beautiful totem pole has now been installed at our Meadow Farm. \n\n\n\nWe will have a celebratory day at the Meadow with garden and Native American-inspired arts & crafts activities\, old fashioned games such as the egg race\, and setting up the area to showcase our totem pole!  \n\n\n\nThis fun-filled day celebrates the efforts of our young people as we reflect on native arts designed and built by our ancestor. DESCRIPTION:Photo by: SUNY Old Westbury Media Innovation Center\n\n\n\nWe are privileged to bring our Project Stewardship teen and young adult group to visit the SUNY Old Westbury TV Studio and Media Innovation Center (MIC) that was recently renovated to create a modern media laboratory committed to multimedia content instruction\, production\, and distribution. Drop-off and pick-up will be at the Campus Center Building Atrium (1st floor). \n\n\n\nWe will receive a guided tour by MIC Director\, Dean Harding including the media lab with state-of-the-art media technology\, the sound room with audio setup\, the news desk and green room with advanced camera equipment and learn about SUNY OW college student projects. Feel free to bring any technical questions along to be answered by experts in the field. Time permitting\, we will have light refreshments at the Campus Center.NOTE: We will have the opportunity to collaborate with Media & Communications Professor\, Ozgur Akgun (Prof. Oz) for Civic Mentoring experiences starting this Fall 2024. This volunteer-based organization is dedicated to improving the quality of Long Island’s South Shore bays\, waterways\, and beaches. Members actively carry out this mission through marine debris cleanups\, advocacy efforts\, and STEM-based education programs for schools and universities.Since its founding in 1990\, Operation Splash members have removed more than three million pounds of trash from local waters and their work has influenced environmental legislation aimed at improving marine environments. Single and double kayaks are available. Kayaking and paddling are low-impact activities that improve fitness\, strength\, and flexibility which can lead to cardiovascular benefits and muscle strength. And\, as stated on their website\, “big smiles!” The WaterFront Center is a non-profit organization located in Oyster Bay\, NY\, offering marine education programs and recreational and instructional sailing programs\, paddle board\, kayak\, and sailboat rentals\, and harbor tours aboard the National Historic Landmark Oyster Sloop\, Christeen. We will continue the game with group storytelling and imaginative role play which takes on different formats and themes.  \n\n\n\nActivity stations can be set up outdoors when warmer weather permits. There is something for everyone as we build social skills\, creativity\, planning ability\, perspective taking\, and more in a fun and flexible way. DESCRIPTION:Advocating\, Celebrating\, Educating! Women’s Diversity Network will hold its sixth annual Summit. This day-long event will include workshops\, panels\, and presentations on a variety of diversity-related topics. Throughout the day\, there will also be multicultural performances as well as a luncheon that reflects the diversity of the day. Some were involved in George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. We will view the exhibit hall\, be guided through this historic home and provided with details of daily life there during the 18th and 19th centuries (1:00-2:30pm).  \n\n\n\nRaynham Hall and those living there were connected to Historic Malcolm House\, the location of our Sangha Education Center on the Jericho Preserve. SUMMARY:Nuno Felting Creative Art Fashion Design
DESCRIPTION:Oksana Fiber Studio\n\n\n\nWe are privileged to have artist Oksana Danziger with us again\, this time to introduce program participants to Nuno Felting! Nuno Felting is a fabric felting technique developed by Polly Stirling\, a fiber artist from New South Wales\, Australia\, around 1992. The name “Nuno” is derived from Japanese (布) and means cloth. \n\n\n\nThis mixed media art combines wool with other fibers such as silk\, to create lightweight but sturdy fabrics that are especially good for fashion. In this workshop we will make purses\, cell phone or eyeglass cases and learn the basic principles of Nuno Felting which can then be applied new creative designs. \n\n\n\nNuno Felt is like a silk gauze that is gaining popularity amongst felters and often used for light summer dresses\, shawls\, scarves\, skirts\, shorts\, book bags\, pencil cases\, etc. Almost any material can be used as long as it is thin enough. Come learn how to recycle fabric materials and manifest ideas for future creations. No previous skill necessary. We will meet a representative who will bring a guide dog and describe the history and impact of their offering. This is a huge undertaking and the skills needed by trainers\, participants in the program\, and dogs alike are amazing. Meet these wonderful canine friends and learn about their training\, daily responsibilities\, and relationships with the individuals who they service. \n\n\n\nIn 1946\, when the Guide Dog Foundation was founded\, its mission was simple: to provide guide dogs and training – free of charge – to people who were blind or have low vision. For more than 75 years\, the Guide Dog Foundation has trained and placed guide dogs and service dogs to provide increased independence and enhanced mobility to individuals who are blind\, have low vision\, or other disabilities. The organization began after WWII to assist Veterans returning from war and has extended their services to many others over the years.  \n\n\n\nWe will also assist Guide Dog Foundation via donations of items on their product donation wish list. We will be introducing our new Dungeon Master\, Riley this season! Riley has been offering D&D sessions with one of our community partners and we are excited to have him with us\, too! As always\, group storytelling will take on different formats including nature themes. Imaginative play is encouraged with current props and sets. Activity stations can be set up outdoors when warmer weather permits. There is something for everyone as we build social skills\, creativity\, planning ability\, perspective taking\, and more in a fun and flexible way! SUMMARY:Sagamore Hill Museum Tour
DESCRIPTION:Public Domain\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1917359\n\n\n\nOur Project Stewardship group will embark on a tour of Sagamore Hill\, the summer home of Theodore Roosevelt\, 26th President of the United States\, from 1885 until his death in 1919. During Roosevelt’s time in office\, his “Summer White House” was the focus of international attention. There are 83 acres of natural surroundings\, historic buildings and trails that are inspired by the legacy of one of America’s most popular presidents. We will tour the main house\, see historic artifacts and learn from the impact of this important historic figure\, hear stories offered by our tour guide and we will visit the Old Orchard Museum. Weather permitting\, we can explore the grounds. Arrive 12:45pm to meet up.
