This will be a two-part event (the second session taking place on Saturday\, May 3rd). \n\n\n\nOksana will introduce us to the history of Nuno Felting (some information is provided below). And during this April 5th session\, we will make creative\, decorative flower designs as Mother’s Day gifts\, an offering to those who do so much to care for our well-being. Our young people will collaborate\, share artistic ideas\, follow directions as well as guide or be guided by peers. There will be socialization throughout. \n\n\n\nOn May 3rd\, we invite family and community members to join us for a special exhibit of our Nuno Felting art work to be presented and gifted to caregivers. Oksana’s amazing creations will be on display as well. Our young people will provide a demonstration of Nuno Felting guided by Oksana. We will offer an information sheet about skill-building and the hands-on creative arts process. We are excited to have our young people teach others about what they have learned. \n\n\n\nCome learn how to recycle fabric materials and manifest ideas for future creations. No previous experience necessary. \n\n\n\nAbout Nuno Felting\n\n\n\nNuno Felting is a fabric felting technique developed by Polly Stirling\, a fiber artist from New South Wales\, Australia\, around 1992. The name “Nuno” is derived from Japanese (布) and means cloth. This mixed media art combines wool with other fibers such as silk\, to create lightweight but sturdy fabrics that are especially good for fashion. We will organize in stations… Something for everyone! \n\n\n\nOne station will be to learn how to measure\, use tools\, cut\, sand\, and organize wood pieces in addition to adding chicken wire\, hinges\, and a latch to make the garden gate. Another station will be available to sand\, paint and decorate posts with colorful designs for the Meadow Farm and/or to take home. Participants may view different design option samples from which to borrow ideas or make their own custom creations. \n\n\n\nEnjoy these hands-on experiences for all skill levels as young people spend time socializing with others. Toniann will provide teens and young adults in our Project Stewardship program with a variety of full group and team activities where participants can express their true voice through monologues to create scenes and dialogues to connect themes in fun and creative ways. \n\n\n\nImprov theatrics activities will include emotion charades\, being aware of your surroundings\, communicating in ways that are helpful to others\, script writing\, and performing with one another. Participants build skills when stepping outside of their comfort zone\, getting into character toward creative expression in a safe space. \n\n\n\nThe activities are flexible and customized for each group. Making a vision board is meant to excite you about the future.  \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will be taking a unique approach to vision boarding by first learning a bit about Feng Shui and the Bagua. The Bagua (or parts of your house or room that have symbolic meaning) will be used as a template for the physical board and placement of images\, words\, and affirmations on it. Drop-off and pick-up will be at the Campus Center Building Atrium (1st floor). \n\n\n\nWe will receive a guided tour by MIC Director\, Dean Harding including the media lab with state-of-the-art media technology\, the sound room with audio setup\, the news desk and green room with advanced camera equipment and learn about SUNY OW college student projects. Feel free to bring any technical questions along to be answered by experts in the field. This volunteer-based organization is dedicated to improving the quality of Long Island’s South Shore bays\, waterways\, and beaches. Members actively carry out this mission through marine debris cleanups\, advocacy efforts\, and STEM-based education programs for schools and universities.Since its founding in 1990\, Operation Splash members have removed more than three million pounds of trash from local waters and their work has influenced environmental legislation aimed at improving marine environments. Through intentional action and advocacy\, Operation Splash believes that the South Shore can be preserved for wildlife and Long Islander’s alike to enjoy for generations to come. Join us for this day of service\, nature\, and fun! \n\n\n\nPlease arrive 12:30/12:45pm as we will begin with a brief presentation in the Operation Splash office at 1:00pm sharp. Participant input will also guide the process as they recognize the benefits of uncovering their true voice. Skills revealed during this workshop can translate to daily life. Single and double kayaks are available. Kayaking and paddling are low-impact activities that improve fitness\, strength\, and flexibility which can lead to cardiovascular benefits and muscle strength. And\, as stated on their website\, “big smiles!” The WaterFront Center is a non-profit organization located in Oyster Bay\, NY\, offering marine education programs and recreational and instructional sailing programs\, paddle board\, kayak\, and sailboat rentals\, and harbor tours aboard the National Historic Landmark Oyster Sloop\, Christeen. Some were involved in George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. We will view the exhibit hall\, be guided through this historic home and provided with details of daily life there during the 18th and 19th centuries (1:00-2:30pm). \n\n\n\nRaynham Hall and those living there were connected to Historic Malcolm House\, the location of our Sangha Education Center on the Jericho Preserve. We can discuss some of this history following the tour as we have a snack at a local eatery (2:30-3:30pm).
