SUMMARY:Summer At The Sangha 2025—Week 3
DESCRIPTION:Week 3 Sessions\n\n\n\nMonday\, 7/21:AM – Audubon Birds of a FeatherPM – Pinecone Bird Feeders \n\n\n\nDuring our morning session\, we will explore and experience birds on the Jericho Preserve starting with a presentation to learn interesting fun facts likely not heard before related to a range of species\, their physical traits\, languages\, impact\, and status as either endangered or flourishing right outside our own front doors. We will engage in various birding activities together. Learn how birds of a feather work together just as humans do. \n\n\n\nIn the afternoon we will contribute to the well-being of our feathered friends by making pinecone bird feeders for them! Participants can make several… some for Sangha and others for home. And time permitting\, we can take a walk to our Meadow Farm to check on the Bluebird houses we built and installed last year. They have been home to a number of bluebirds providing a safe space from the threat of extinction. \n\n\n\nWednesday\, 7/23:AM – Painting Cajun Wooden Box DrumsPM – Live Marine Life Touch Tank \n\n\n\nWe will complete our Cajun Wood Box Drum project today! And paint\, stain or decorate our instruments. Malcolm Hall will guide us throughout the process an inspire us with his musical talent and tales from Guyana. Sample indigenous drums and other instruments will be brought in to practice with during today’s session. We can discuss colors and patterns and the significance in certain indigenous cultures by which participants can choose a color or pattern that appeals to or holds meaning for them to use in their design. \n\n\n\nWe are excited to have The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay join us once again for a marine life education session with a touch tank filled with species from the local area to identify\, handle\, and explore in detail including learning about our natural water habitats and how to protect them and the life that they support. These interesting creatures are interdependent in our ecosystem(s) and we can take part in further exploration through an outing to The WaterFront Center and Friends of the Bay in upcoming seasons.Friday\, 7/25:AM – Meadow Farm Garden Decoration DayPM – Paint Dyeing with Magical Indigo Leaves \n\n\n\nWe are excited to teach through a short presentation about the symbolic meaning of Medicine Wheel Gardens in certain Native American cultures. And we will continue decorating ours for all to enjoy. The presentation will be followed by rock painting. While paint dries\, we will bring larger rocks\, signs and stakes over to the Meadow for installation. We can enjoy time in the garden with an array of team-building activities. We are excited to introduce participants to the Indigo growing in the Meadow that is being cultivated for the workshop up next. \n\n\n\nThis afternoon\, artist and Indigo gardener\, Bernadette Puleo\, will lead us in using leaves of the Japanese Indigo plant and a sprinkle of salt to dye a silk tapestry of wall hangings that will be displayed at our second Indigo session and exhibition event later this season. In today’s session\, Bernadette will explain the history of indigo dyeing\, a universal practice that has been used to dye textiles for over 6\,000 years with various techniques developing in different places over time. Participants will experience one of those techniques. At our second session\, the silk wall hanging will be stenciled or hammered with a design using rolled up leaves or Indigo pigment. We will experience the magic of Indigo creating beautiful patterns that are uniquely ours. \n\n\n\n\nSummer at the Sangha 2025\n\n\n\nSee all the Summer At The Sangha events > \n\n\n\nDuring this 4-week summer general public program\, teens and young adults with a range of abilities (in middle\, high school\, college and the workplace) are introduced to a sampling of hands-on\, heart-centered nature and wellness community classes across various subject areas such as history\, science\, and creative art outlets. Games and team-building\, too! Guided by our teachers\, farmers\, peer-mentors and community partners\, participants come together for outdoor educational experiences\, to enjoy camaraderie and minimize anxiety. SUMMARY:Summer At The Sangha 2025—Week 2
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Sebastian Abbruzzese on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWeek 2 Sessions\n\n\n\nMonday\, 7/14:AM – Climate Change & Community CivicsPM – Meet the Minis for Horse Therapy Education \n\n\n\nMany of our young people care about our environment and all life forms impacted by climate change. We are grateful to have Monique Fitzgerald and Kaneita Marcelin who lead the Long Island Revision Project with us today. They will provide background information about the local communities impacted by toxins in our soil\, water\, and air. And how we can contribute to transforming these places to become cleaner and healthier environments for all. Interactive and engaging activities will lead us towards social action that we can embark on together or individually. We are excited to welcome HorseAbility and their miniature therapy horses to teach us about their contributions to the Long Island community. According to HorseAbility\, the “mini horses” are similar to their full-sized equine partners in terms of personality\, intelligence\, and disposition. Due to their calm\, patient demeanor and willingness to interact with persons of all ages and abilities\, they consistently bring smiles to the faces of everyone they meet. We can enjoy hands-on petting and grooming and will experience the calm\, and connection these amazing animals make possible. \n\n\n\nWednesday\, 7/16: \n\n\n\nAM – Medicine Wheel Herb Garden PM – Creative Mosaic Art – Garden Stepping StonesThis morning we will begin our day with a native Penobscot legend of Arrowhead Finger to set the stage for planting herbs in our Medicine Wheel Garden. We will take a nature walk to our Meadow Farm where we will embark on an educational experience about the medicinal properties of certain herbs that we will plant in the summer section of the garden. These wonderous herbs will be used for teas and food ingredients at the end of the season. There will be various tasks available and team-building involved. \n\n\n\nThanks to one of our former mentors\, Sabrina and mentee\, Marko\, we had the opportunity to learn about mosaic tile designs from around the world. Mosaic mean “a picture or pattern produced by arranging together tessera\, which are small colored pieces of stone\, tile\, or glass\, or other nature-based materials like shells.” Today\, participants will be inspired by mosaics from ancient cultures and then design their own creative mosaic art garden stepping stones through a mosaic art kit. Once dry\, the designs can be either added to our Medicine Wheel Garden or taken home. \n\n\n\nFriday\, 7/18: \n\n\n\nAM – For the Love of BeesPM – Forest Bathing Meditative Nature Exploration \n\n\n\nBees are winged insects closely related to wasps and ants\, known for their roles in pollination and who contribute to enabling life on earth. We will learn about the best-known bee species\, the western honey bee who produces honey. And explore their amazing relationship with humans. Come find out new and interesting bee fun facts through a video or game\, and the knowledge of an expert beekeeper who will come with some bee surprises! \n\n\n\nThen\, during lunchtime\, we are happy to have Laura Beatus offer Laughing Yoga which can decrease stress and enable a greater sense of well-being leading into Forest Bathing with Stephanie Gaglione\, Certified Nature Therapy Guide. Stephanie\, who will start with a meditation and introduce ways in which to explore nature through a range of invitations providing creative and enjoyable sensory experiences around Historic Malcolm House on the Jericho Preserve. Forest Bathing helps to minimize anxiety and attain various health benefits. Participants may share during community circle and we will conclude with a heart-felt tea ceremony as we take from and give back to Earth. SUMMARY:Summer At The Sangha 2025—Week 1
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Rifqi Ali Ridho on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWeek 1 Sessions\n\n\n\nMonday\, 7/7:AM – Nature-Inspired Watercolor PaintingPM – Sound Story Song \n\n\n\nDuring our morning Nature-Inspired Watercolor Painting workshop\, participants will reflect on the beauty of nature all around in land\, water\, animals and plants that are part of our ecosystem and connect us all. Guided through watercolor painting by artists from the Spirit of Huntington Arts Center\, we will be inspired by the life and work of Claude Monet. We will discover the story behind this legendary Impressionist painter and explore his iconic landscape masterpieces. Using Monet’s art as our muse\, participants will learn essential watercolor techniques and create their own impressionist-style landscape paintings. We look forward to encouraging the creativity of all who attend in whatever shape it takes as we engage in watercolor art together. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be followed by lunch and then a musical experience with musician and vocalist\, Lisa Mischke\, who is returning this summer by request of our participants. She will offer an interesting array of musical activities connecting humans to the natural world. Embark on a journey through the power of sound as we actively engage with interesting instruments from various world cultures. This includes a harp\, the origins of which has evolved in diverse cultures over time and the Indian harmonium\, originating in West Bengal. \n\n\n\nWednesday\, 7/9: \n\n\n\nAM – Indian Rangoli Art & Rakhi Friendship Bracelets PM – Live Animal ExperienceWe are happy to have Kashmiraa Pandit of the Asian American Institute of Research and Engagement (AAIRE) with us for a workshop covering the traditional Indian art forms of Rangoli and Rakhi making\, delving into their history to explore their origins\, evolution\, symbolism\, and continuation today. While each art form holds their own unique history\, the symbolic significance of blessings\, protection\, love\, and understanding remain central to both as each continues to impact our lives.  Together\, we will embark on creating a beautiful Rangoli design with vibrant patterns using natural materials like rice flour\, flower petals\, and colored powders. Participants will also have the chance to make Rakhi bracelets\, a symbol of love\, care\, and protection for family members and friends alike. Both experiences will impart its timeless value towards building strength and communities grounded in care and understanding.  \n\n\n\nAfter lunch\, we are privileged to have Sweetbriar Nature Center with us again this summer. They will introduce participants to various animals who reside at their science education and native wildlife rehabilitation center\, offer hands-on touch\, and discuss details about animal attributes\, behavior\, and habitats. We welcome the education and animal insight Sweet Briar brings to Sangha. And look forward to a visit with mammals and reptiles alike! \n\n\n\nFriday\, 7/11:AM – Indigenous Sounds & Nature’s Music PM – Cajun Wooden Box Drum Making \n\n\n\nSinger\, songwriter and voice coach Toniann Butler will spend time with us this morning providing an educational experience of indigenous sounds or nature music! Many cultures from around the world use drum\, flute and other instruments made out of natural materials to express their ideas\, beliefs\, and feelings while providing lessons and insights to others. Toniann will introduce us to the origins of various wood drums and engage us in related musical activities. \n\n\n\nIn the afternoon\, we will embark on making Cajun wood box drums with Malcolm Hall\, our long-term community partner and wood-working expert. Painting of the wood box drums will take place on a separate day where there will also be time for completion. Malcolm’s Guyanese heritage and experience as a musician lend themselves well to exploring this musical form further. Sample indigenous drums will be brought in for education and usage. SUMMARY:Family Nature & Wellness Day - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to offer a special day of nature and wellness for families with children\, teens and young adults of all ages and abilities. Adult community members are welcome to this Sangha Education Center event\, too! Come participate in various activities demonstrating our Nature & Wellness Connections program options. The health benefits of reconnecting our children (and ourselves!) with nature has become more evident in recent years\, yet is something we innately know. Rediscover that we are nature… while we learn and grow together on the Jericho Preserve. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome to take part in “Yoga Mountain Story” where we will enact the story of saving the environment through yoga poses guided by a narrator. We offer an array of nature art and planting opportunities in stations run by our wonderful Sangha Staff\, and a glimpse into Forest Bathing Meditative Nature Exploration on the premises around Historic Malcolm House by Certified Nature Therapy Guide\, Stephanie Gaglione. There will be a longer nature walk option to our Meadow Farm as well! \n\n\n\nRegular participation in Forest Bathing can reduce stress\, improve memory and focus\, bolster immune system response\, lead to better sleep\, and an overall sense of well-being. Reap the benefits by participating in this community event! And feel free to return for our regular Nature & Wellness Connections sessions each season. \n\n\n\nAnd\, we will have a SPECIAL GUEST\, Kathy of Backyard Bees! All will enjoy Kathy’s knowledge of bees and honey-based products! Teens and young adults will have the chance to preview some of what Kathy has to offer in preparation for exploring bee topic and activities with her during Summer at the Sangha! STAY TUNED for our Summer at the Sangha 2025 schedule – coming soon! \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Nature & Wellness Connections program\, please register using the free “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Friends of the Bay Beach Clean-Up & Diamondback Terrapin Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Public domain image courtesy of Hagerty Ryan\, USFWS.\n\n\n\nOur Project Stewardship teens and young adults have enjoyed participating with Friends of the Bay for a beach clean-up in the past. We will now participate in another beach clean-up\, this time at Center Island Beach (the BAY side) with other community groups. In addition\, during this outing we will learn about the endangered Diamondback Terrapins through an important monitoring program run by Friends of the Bay. The Diamondback Terrapins are an iconic Long Island species and essential to maintain a balanced ecosystem. Terrapins are facing serious population decline and we can help. \n\n\n\nThe goal of this program is to monitor and record the distribution of Diamondback Terrapins in our region by recording any sign of terrapin presence. We will participate in monitoring training and be on the look out for terrapin friends! Please feel free to view this terrapin fact sheet prior to our outing. You may bring water\, snack\, and gloves with you as we share beach-time together while helping the natural and living environment around us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Nuno Felting Mother’s Day Creations Workshop & Exhibit (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Oksana Fiber Studio\n\n\n\nWe are privileged to have artist Oksana Danziger with us again\, this time to introduce teens and young adults in our Project Stewardship program to a new Nuno Felting art project for Mother’s Day! This is a two-part event\, the second session taking place today. \n\n\n\nOksana has already introduced us to the history of Nuno Felting (some information is provided below). And during our first session\, participants made creative and decorative flowers as Mother’s Day gifts\, an offering to those who do so much to care for our well-being. Our young people have enjoyed collaborating\, sharing artistic ideas with one another\, following directions and guiding or being guided by peers. Socialization\, too. \n\n\n\nToday\, we invite family and community members to join us for a special exhibit of our Nuno Felting artwork to be presented and gifted to caregivers. Oksana’s amazing creations will be on display as well. Our young people will complete the second half of their designs (stems\, leaves\, and flower pistons)\, prodiving a demonstration of Nuno Felting guided by Oksana. Parents and caregivers\, family\, friends\, and community members\, please let us know if you will be there: info@sanghacenter.org. \n\n\n\nWe are excited to have our young people teach others about what they have learned. See how to recycle fabric materials and manifest ideas for future creations. Special refreshments will be served. No fee for participating parents/caregivers or community members. \n\n\n\nAbout Nuno Felting\n\n\n\nNuno Felting is a fabric felting technique developed by Polly Stirling\, a fiber artist from New South Wales\, Australia\, around 1992. The name “Nuno” is derived from Japanese (布) and means cloth. This mixed media art combines wool with other fibers such as silk\, to create lightweight but sturdy fabrics that are especially good for fashion. Nuno Felt is like a silk gauze that is gaining popularity amongst felters and often used for light summer dresses\, shawls\, scarves\, skirts\, shorts\, book bags\, pencil cases\, etc. Almost any material can be used as long as it is thin enough. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Nuno Felting Mother’s Day Creations Workshop & Exhibit (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Oksana Fiber Studio\n\n\n\nWe are privileged to have artist Oksana Danziger with us again\, this time to introduce teens and young adults in our Project Stewardship program to a new Nuno Felting art project for Mother’s Day! This will be a two-part event (the second session taking place on Saturday\, May 3rd). \n\n\n\nOksana will introduce us to the history of Nuno Felting (some information is provided below). And during this April 5th session\, we will make creative\, decorative flower designs as Mother’s Day gifts\, an offering to those who do so much to care for our well-being. Our young people will collaborate\, share artistic ideas\, follow directions as well as guide or be guided by peers. There will be socialization throughout. \n\n\n\nOn May 3rd\, we invite family and community members to join us for a special exhibit of our Nuno Felting art work to be presented and gifted to caregivers. Oksana’s amazing creations will be on display as well. Our young people will provide a demonstration of Nuno Felting guided by Oksana. We will offer an information sheet about skill-building and the hands-on creative arts process. We are excited to have our young people teach others about what they have learned. \n\n\n\nCome learn how to recycle fabric materials and manifest ideas for future creations. No previous experience necessary. SUMMARY:Electronic Lego Science Team-Building Day
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Jelleke Vanooteghem on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWe are excited to announce that our community partner\, Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States (AYLUS)\, has donated three Electronic Lego Science kits and we will be embarking on a team-building day to assemble them together\, one kit more advanced than the others: a radio telescope\, a navigation satellite\, and an emergency communication vehicle. \n\n\n\nWe will first learn about the technology underlying each kit through a brief presentation. And then collaborate on assembly\, installation\, and connectivity of one (or more\, depending on complexity and time) of the three kits. We will set up stations for teams to play specific parts in the building process and then come together in the end to enable the different parts to form a working model. \n\n\n\nCome take part in this fun science adventure and build collaboration\, organization\, and problem solving skills while enjoying time with peers! Another session to complete the other kit(s) will take place in subsequent season(s)\, if needed. Special refreshments to be served at this final Project Stewardship event of Fall 2024. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below. SUMMARY:Vision Boarding for the New Year
DESCRIPTION:Photo by freepik\n\n\n\nA vision board is a collage of images\, words\, and affirmations that represent your dreams\, goals\, and desires. It’s a visual representation or roadmap of how you envision your best life\, helping you to manifest it. Making a vision board is meant to excite you about the future.  \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will be taking a unique approach to vision boarding by first learning a bit about Feng Shui and the Bagua. The Bagua (or parts of your house or room that have symbolic meaning) will be used as a template for the physical board and placement of images\, words\, and affirmations on it. We will discuss our thoughts and ideas as a group\, list out some of the specifics to organize ourselves\, create our vision board\, and share our final products. Our goal is that this exercise inspire and aid our Project Stewardship teens and young adults in building thinking and planning skills towards creating the reality of their dreams.  \n\n\n\nPlease feel free to give some thought to areas of your life in alignment with the Bagua (i.e.\, creativity\, helpful people and travel\, health\, relationships\, prosperity\, reputation\, family) and bring in related images from magazines or internet printouts to have them available and possibly to paste on your board. We will also have materials / images available for this purpose as new ideas continue to flow during the workshop. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nIf you are already a member of our Project Stewardship program\, please register using the “Member” registration below.
